RE:USE RÖTELSTRASSE 61

NILS GROOTENZERINK, MANUELA FOSCALDI, ANDREA MEROLAIn this project, we reflected on the meaning of inhabitation; Habitable in what way, for whom and over what period of time? We dealt with themes of deconstruction and reconstruction, decay and “re-cay”. We sought to challenge the meaning of architecture along with its norms and tested out its limits.
Through storytelling, sketching by hand and model building we imagined a future where the proposed, uninhabited, building at Rötelstrasse 61 is re-habited by other means than human.
Through storytelling, sketching by hand and model building we imagined a future where the proposed, uninhabited, building at Rötelstrasse 61 is re-habited by other means than human.
In a following step, we showed how human and non-human life can create a new, multi-layered coexistence in the urban fabric of Zurich.
Our proposal consisted of interventions on site such as the removal of windows and the roof, which are re-used on the neighbouring plot. Taking the accelerated decay into account, we argue that buildings predestined for demolition bear the potential for a second life and therefore argue for the potential of temporality.
